Annie

When I was a kid I loved the musical "Annie" (just like every other little girl in America) and I was in the play twice, so when the traveling Broadway theater came to Kingsbury Hall at the U, I snatched two student priced tickets and took Roman with me as my date for the evening. (I figured he would appreciate it more than Jason.) We sat 6 th row and center, and it was fun to show Roman the Orchestra pit and the set design was amazing. (Don't worry, we have him in soccer this season so he is well balanced.) Anyway, it was interesting to see it as an adult because of all of the post 1st world war references to Herbert Hoover and the depression. Also, I never noticed as a child that "Annie" was a comment on "optimism" especially during that time in history. "The sun will come out tomorrow." It also reminded me of Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables" in the theory that personal character is more important than one's origin. It's strange, but it almost seems like this is creeping up in our society again in a way that we have not known for a while. It seems that materialism and greed is at an all time high and maybe I am just noticing because I am an adult now, but with the housing scandals and the so called "war on the middle class" it just seems that business affairs are going unfettered with our "laissez-faire" policy which I somewhat agree with, but I wish there was a way to have more checks and balances . Sorry to get political, but after seeing that play I couldn't help but think about current events.
